Sashiko is a sewing technique developed in parts of Japan and handed down for generations. It uses one simple stitch style, a straight stitch, to create intricate patterns for decoration, reinforcement, and mending. Known not only for its elegance and utility, sashiko is also highly regarded for its contemplative, meditative quality.

This 2-hour beginner-friendly class will cover the basics of the technique. Students will leave with two decorative patches they've stitched, plus either a mended garment or a third decorative patch. Students are invited to bring one item of clothing (with a small hole or stain, or not) to mend or embellish—or simply practice the technique on fabric provided.

All materials included.
