Cochineal has long been revered for its vibrant pinks, reds, and purples. It is an insect found on the prickly pear cactus with a rich history of use as a dye product in Central and South American textiles. In this class, natural dye artist Felise Gutierrez will lead us through creating a spectrum of colors ranging from red to purple. We will cover how to pre-mordant fabric, how to prepare a dye bath, and how to dye fabric using cochineal. As our fabric steeps in the dye bath, Felise will open the floor for a conversation around our relationship to place, through craft, culture, and the materials that we use in our daily lives.
This 3-hour beginner friendly class will cover the basics of natural dyeing. Students will leave with a cotton bandanna dyed in cochineal and the confidence to try it at home.

For classes that are multiple dates or a series, cancellations must be for the entire session, rather than individual dates. Refunds described below are less credit card fees. Cancellations made more than 14 days in advance of the start of a class or session are fully refundable; cancellations that are made within 7 - 14 days prior to the start of a class or session are 50% refundable. Cancellations made less than 7 days prior to the start of a class or session are not refundable. Note that classes with less than 3 students enrolled are subject to cancellation by Estero Bay Art + Craft and will be fully refunded, including credit card fees.
