Incense making is an artform that dates back at least 5,000-6,000 years, to ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. It has been practiced by many different cultures around the world throughout history.  From birth, to death, medicine, and meditation, burning resins, spices, and herbs has long been used for sacred rituals to heal, protect, connect to the divine, and expand consciousness.

It is only relatively recently, that the production of synthetic chemical fragrances began to take over the ancient traditions of making incense, which uses natural botanicals from the earth. Unfortunately, it is now extremely rare to find incense that are not made with toxic synthetic fragrances.

In this class, we will explore many different botanical herbs, spices, and resins that have been used for natural incense making throughout time. We will venture across the globe (without leaving the room) to meet some of the most ancient herbs and resins, and discover what cultures used them, as well as connect to several botanicals that can be sustainably harvested locally and grown in our gardens. We will craft our own intoxicatingly aromatic incense blend from start to finish. Everyone will go home their own handmade natural incense sticks…and smelling like an ancient sacred temple.

All materials included.
