Dr. Samuel Bautista Lazo, a Benzaa (Zapotec, Cloud People) weaver from Oaxaca will present the history of his weaving tradition; from prehistoric weaving techniques using agave fiber, to the use of cotton and the backstrap loom and the 16th century pedal loom used to this day to create beautiful rugs, textile accesories and home decor. Zapotec weaving has survived and adapted the technological changes of history but yet it remains rooted in the landscape, in community and regenerative practises. Weaving has allowed the Cloud People to produce surplus to trade and to have free time to tend their ancestral lands through the milpa food system, community land tending of the forest and water springs while also nurturing a thriving textile culture that shows in local dances and village celebrations. Zapotec rugs encrypt ancient knowledge and stories that Dr. Bautista Lazo will share with his background in science and engineering to inspire the wider community to reconnect to their own ancestral lineage and create a new face and true heart for our current world systems. For classes that are multiple dates or a series, cancellations must be for the entire session, rather than individual dates. Refunds described below are less credit card fees. Cancellations made more than 14 days in advance of the start of a class or session are fully refundable; cancellations that are made within 7 - 14 days prior to the start of a class or session are 50% refundable. Cancellations made less than 7 days prior to the start of a class or session are not refundable. Note that classes with less than 3 students enrolled are subject to cancellation by Estero Bay Art + Craft and will be fully refunded, including credit card fees.
